City School of the Arts is a public middle school where the arts drive students’ growth, and we are inviting a small group of people to help define the next phase.

Creativity Builds Confidence
The CSA Approach to Learning

New York City Charter School of the Arts is a public middle school built on the belief that artistic, academic, and social-emotional learning are inextricably linked. Tuition-free, portfolio- and audition-free, and open to all by lottery, CSA was founded to ensure that a high-quality academic education alongside specialized artistic instruction is not reserved for students with privilege, prior training, or access to private opportunity.

For ten years, CSA has been proving that arts-integrated education is not enrichment added onto learning. It is a powerful way to deepen learning itself. Art is not a side dish; it is central to the learning experience. Students analyze literature through performance, apply mathematical reasoning through design, and ground creative work in historical context. Time is one of the most valuable resources in a school, and at CSA we dedicate one-third of every day to the arts, signaling that creativity is essential to deep, meaningful learning. Students are not only learning content. They are developing confidence, agency, and expressive capacity.

CSA is not a typical charter school or arts conservatory, but something far rarer: a rigorous public school where achievement is measured not only in outcomes, but in confidence, agency, and belonging.

A Critical Moment
For Arts Education in New York

New Home, New Charter

CSA has moved into a permanent home in Lower Manhattan’s Seaport neighborhood and secured a renewed charter term.

Real Outcomes

For the past decade, CSA students have gone on to thrive at some of New York City’s most competitive high schools.

Strong Leadership

Friends of CSA is supported by a board with deep roots across New York’s education, nonprofit, and business communities.

What is
Friends of CSA?

To build on this momentum, CSA is forming Friends of CSA: a focused, philanthropic group committed to helping the school grow its reach, resources, and long-term impact. Members support the organization through financial contribution, introductions, and advocacy—helping ensure that this model continues to grow and reach more students.

Friends of CSA is built around a shared belief: that arts-integrated education develops confident, capable, and creative young people—and that this approach deserves to expand. With strong momentum behind the school, including full enrollment and plans to grow into a high school, this is a moment where the right support can accelerate what comes next.

Membership is grounded in philanthropy. Each member contributes meaningfully each year and plays a role in extending the school’s network—connecting CSA to individuals, partners, and opportunities that strengthen its future. The goal is simple: to build a group of supporters who believe in the work and want to help it scale.
